ON CHRISTIANITY

— DEAR REV. GRAHAM: I have some friends who keep telling me I need to fi nd out how to live from the Bible. But I’ve gotten along just fine so far by using ordinary common sense to make my decisions, so why should I bother with the Bible?

DEAR K.G.: You say you’ve been able to make it through life by relying on your common sense “so far” - but how do you know it won’t let you down? Or what will you do if you face something you can’t handle?

What you’re really saying is that you don’t need God, and that’s a very dangerous attitude. It’s dangerous because you’re saying you know more than God about what’s best for you. It’s dangerous also because once your life is over you are going to meet Him and you’ll be totally unprepared for that day. The Bible warns, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death” (Proverbs 14:12).

Don’t let your pride, or anything else, cut you off from God and His wisdom for living. God loves you, and He cares what happens to you. If He didn’t, He wouldn’t have bothered to give us His Word to guide us. His Word shows us how to do what’s right and avoid what’s wrong. The Psalmist’s words are true: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105).

But the Bible, most of all, points us to Jesus Christ, who gave His life so that some day we could live in God’s presence forever. Turn to Christ and give your life to Him today.
