Dad had son in car during police chase, authorities say

A Little Rock man was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and first-degree murder after authorities say he fled the scene of a shooting with his toddler son in the car.

According to an incident report, Little Rock officers were responding to a different call near at 17th Street on Monday night when they were alerted to gunshots. At 4312 West 18th St. the officers found Joe Jackson lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. Jackson was transported by MEMS to UAMS, where he was pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the vehicle that left the scene as a beige Mercury Marquis. Officers tracked down the car and tried to get the driver to pull over, but he fled going east on Interstate 630.

Arkansas State Police also joined the pursuit as the man, identified as 48-year-old Jacques Slocum, entered North Little Rock. A pit maneuver at 33rd and Pike stopped the chase, and that is when authorities discovered 2-year-old Dinjahwek Anderson in the car with his father.

A weapon seen tossed from the window of the car was recovered by officers on the side of the freeway at Interstate 30 and Sykes, according to police.

Witnesses told authorities that a man they knew as "Jock" and Jackson were in a dispute and that "Jock" exited his vehicle and shot Jackson in the chest, the report said.

Slocum was transported to the Pulaski County jail. He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of a firearm by certain person, four counts of traffic violation and one count of reckless driving. Authorities said Slocum had multiple felony convictions out of other jurisdictions.

Anderson was released into the custody of his mother.
