Wal-Mart giving $5 million to museum

— Wal-Mart said Tuesday that it is donating $5 million toward the construction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

The retailer said in a news release that its support of the Smithsonian Institution museum is part of its "commitment to advance causes that promote diversity and inclusion."

"We know the rich history that will soon be on display at the museum is something important to preserve, study and experience," Wal-Mart Global Chief Diversity Officer Sharon Orlopp said in the release. "We share the Smithsonian Institution's passion to promote and honor diversity and the contributions that African Americans have made to our country and culture."

The $500 million museum was established in 2003 by Congress and is scheduled to open in 2015.
