Earnings report

— Companies reporting quarterly earnings on Tuesday included:

Peabody Energy Corp., the coal-mining giant, a profit of $274.1 million, or $1 a share, up from $224.1 million, or 83 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 9 percent to $2.04 billion. Shares fell $1.28 to close at $39.66.

Reynolds American Inc., the nation’s second-biggest tobacco company, a profit of $367 million, or 63 cents a share, down from $381 million, or 65 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue fell about 2 percent to$2.2 billion. Shares fell $1.33 to close at $38.04.

U.S. Steel, a profit of $22 million, or 15 cents a share, up from a loss of $51 million, or a loss of 35 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 13 percent to $5.08 billion. Shares fell $2.37 to close at $22.40.

3M Co., the manufacturing conglomerate, a profit of $1.09 billion, or $1.52 a share, down from $1.11 billion, or $1.53 a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 10 percent to $7.53 billion. Shares fell $5.14 to close at $77.04.
