Cargill calls back 40 to work at Springdale plant

— Cargill Inc. has recalled 40 of the 130 workers who were laid off at its turkey processing plant following two recalls of ground turkey.

Cargill spokesman Michael Martin told the Springdale Morning News that the workers will fill open positions. He said plant’s ground turkey production remains shut down.

Production of ground turkey was stopped after the salmonella outbreak that killed one person and sickened about 130 nationwide was linked to the Springdale plant.

The plant has about 1,200 employees and — at full production — processes 7 million pounds of finished turkey products each week ranging from whole birds to turkey breasts to ground products.

Martin said the company is working with federal food safety officials to restart ground turkey production at the plant.
