Concert, workshop feature duo

— Sara Grey and Kieron Means will teach a workshop on “The Migration of Songs from the U.K. to the U.S.” and then perform a concert at Arkansas State University-Heber Springs.

The program will begin at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Entergy Room.

Grey is a song collector, banjo player and singer. Her particular interest and area of expertise is the migration of songs from the British Isles to the North American continent with immigrants from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Grey was born in America, but early in her career, she went to Scotland to do research. Thirty years later, she is still there and researching. She performs and teaches regularly in the U.K., Europe, North America and Australia.

“During our concerts, we present material from a wide range of American traditions including old time songs and ballads sung in harmony, blues and gospel music as well as a few of our favorite written songs,” Grey said.

“The passage of songs from Great Britain and Ireland to America is of particular interest to us.”

Means, Grey’s son, was born in the United States but grew up in the British Isles with the music of both traditions. He is a guitar player and singer, including traditional and contemporary music. He teaches guitar and performs, and often tours with his mother.

The workshop will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. The cost for the workshop is $2 and for the concert is $4; the cost to attend both is $5. Students at ASU-Heber Springs and people ages 60 and older will be admitted free. There is limited seating, and those who would like to purchase advance tickets can do so by calling (501) 362-1125. The University Café, on the second floor of the Student Services Building, will serve dinner from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
