Greenbrier Panthers

Conference: 5A West

Coach: Jason Johnson

Assistant coach: Brad Bangs

2009-2010 record: Finished sixth in conference play

Returning starters: Neal Burcham a two-time all-state selection, guard; Austin White, a senior who head coach Jason Johnson calls a “work horse.”

Best inside players: “We don’t have one,” Johnson said. “I hope that will change.” White listed three potentials, however: Kyle Cane, a 6-foot-3-inch junior; Logan Hovarth, a 6-5 sophomore and Corey Powers, a 6-1 sophomore.

Best outside players: Newcommer Dylan Singleton is a senior who hasn’t played the past two years. “He has shown in practice that he will be on the floor,” Johnson said. The head coach also listed Ty Ferguson and Darin Gibbs as forwards who can play on the outside.

How will you match/exceed/fall short of your success from last year: Johnson said that although he only has two returning starters, the team is still experiences overall. He will rely on that experience to score points. “We didn't shoot the ball really well last year, and I think this year it will be a lot better,” he said.

Strengths of the team: Experience and depth

Weaknesses of the team: Size. “I don't think we're small,” Johnson said. “But if you look at the size of some of our competitors, we might be.”

Games to watch: “Any conference game,” Johnson said. The coach said he is not exaggerating. He said this season, his team has something to prove.

College prospects: Neal Burcham is being recruited in basketball as well as football. “He is a real potential Division I prospect,” Johnson said.

In a nutshell: Greenbrier lacks depth and will be counting on players like Burcham to play a hard all-around game this season. “We just don't have any true ballhandlers,” Johnson said. He hopes shooting the ball better this season will translate into more points. “And hopefully that will translate into more wins,” he said.
