Perryville Lady Mustangs

Conference: 3A-4

Coach: Terry Smith (first with the girls team)

Assistant coach: Len Harris

2010-11 record: 15-12 overall (fourth seed in region)

Returning starters: Tori Cody, junior guard; Lakyn Kendrick, junior forward; Whitney Cooper, senior guard.

Best inside players: The Lady Mustangs should have back two of their best inside players, both of whom were injured last season: Jacque Coronado, a 5-8 senior; and Paige Hale, a 5-11 senior.

Best outside players: Perryville looks to have several: Cooper, a 5-5 senior; Cody, a 5-6 junior; Kendrick, a 5-7 junior; and Lexa Kendrick, a 5-4 sophomore.

How will you match/exceed/fall short of your success from last year? Smith said Lady Mustangs’ goal every year is to reach the regional tournament. Last year, they fell to Greenland in the first round, 63-48.

Strengths of the team: Smith said he liked his team’s work ethic and competitiveness.

Weaknesses of the team: The Lady Mustangs have a lack of size.

Games to watch: Smith said Bigelow, Lamar and Atkins would be teams to watch. Bigelow reached the quarterfinals of the Class 2A State Tournament last year.

Toughest opponent: The Lady Mustangs will face tests in the nonconference schedule with Jessieville and Bigelow, Smith said. Bigelow reached the quarterfinals of Class 2A last year; Jessieville fell in the first round of the Class 3A tournament. In the 3A-4, he said, Lamar and Charleston would provide the toughest tests.

College prospects: None.

In a nutshell: “This is a great group of hard-working young ladies,” Smith said. “They have been very receptive to learning a new system. We hope to be a factor in the conference and regional tournaments.”
