If competition for campaign headquarters is any criterion, this is going to be an active political summer. Doug Szenher, a spokesman for the Department of Pollution Control and Ecology, said there has been “quite a bit of black smoke” generated by burning tires and other rubber products at the illegal dump site off Arkansas 69 about five miles northwest of Batesville. PC&E officials don’t know how the fire started or who reported it to local officials, Szenher said. It was first reported to PC&E Sunday, he said Wednesday afternoon. The state ordered DiversiTech General Inc. of Batesville, a rubber manufacturer, to put out the fire, Szenher said.

Secretary of State Sharon Priest closed the Capitol Hill Apartments building just northeast of the state Capitol early Monday evening because of safety concerns. “It is my opinion and my staff’s opinion that the building is unsafe to occupy at least for residents,” she said. The seven-story state-owned building has about 44 apartments, many of which have been rented, often at cheap rates, by legislators for their use during legislative sessions.
