8 LR pupils, 4 teachers win Stephens Awards

— Eight Little Rock high school seniors and four teachers received 2012 Stephens Awards on Monday.

Four teachers and eight students were honored with the Stephens Award from The City Education Trust at a ceremony at the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce on Monday afternoon. Teachers received $7,500 each, and students took home $5,000 cash for their achievements.

This year, The City Education Trust is providing $5,000 scholarships to the outstanding students and $7,500 cash awards to the instructors, a news release said. Jackson T. Stephens and W.R. “Witt” Stephens formed the trust in 1985 with proceeds from the sale of the Stephens’ interest in Riverside Cable Television Co.

The ceremony was Monday in the AT&T Auditorium at the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce office.

Student winners were: Muhammad Abu-Rmaileh of Little Rock Central High School, son of Aida Shanti and Akef Abu-Rmaileh; Margaret Anne Beetstra of Episcopal Collegiate School, daughter of Joan and Stephen Beetstra; Catie Edwards of Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School, daughter of Joanne Edwards; Whitney Gao of Little Rock Central High School, daughter of Li Tong and Xiang Gao; Rachel Madigan of Mount St. Mary Academy, daughter of Susie and Steve Madigan; Tom Simmermaker of Catholic High School for Boys, son of Anne and Jeff Simmermaker; Aaron Yin of Little Rock Central High School, son of Fengjuan Zhang and Wendud Yin; Tiancheng Zhang of Pulaski Academy, son of Jinfen Li and Wenle Zhang.

Winning teachers were: Kara Branscum of Little Rock Christian Academy, Michelle Dowell of Episcopal Collegiate School, Melissa Anne “Missy” Gazette of Mount St. Mary Academy and Betsy Hall of Little Rock Central High School.
