— HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Pottsville back suspended indefinitely Pottsville senior running back Quwillien Porter has been suspended indefinitely by Coach Bryan Rust after being arrested Monday.

Porter, 17, faces four felony charges and was still in Pope County Detention Center on $100,000 bond as of Wednesday afternoon, said Sgt.

Randell Streeval. Porter is charged as an adult and has a Sept. 10 court date, Streeval said.

Rust declined to discuss why Porter was suspended, other than to say he “definitely” would not start the season with the Apaches.

“As of right now I really don’t know a whole lot, but right now he’s not with us,” Rust said. “He got in a little bit of trouble, and we’re waiting to find out the extent of it.” Porter and at least two other men were arrested after Russellville police responded to a report of a robbery Monday afternoon. Police said a man was accosted by four black men, one of whom struck him with a handgun before fleeing.

Porter was charged with aggravated robbery, residential robbery, theft of property and fleeing, Streeval said. Two 18-year-old men, Oscar Romero and Patrick Abbot, face the same charges, Streeval said.

Porter helped the Apaches win the 4-4A Conference last season, rushing for 1,276 yards and 33 touchdowns. The Apaches finished 11-1-1 and lost to Pulaski Academy in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Rust said the loss of Porter means Pottsville will have to count more on some less experienced players.

“We’ve got some pretty good athletes,” Rust said, “but any time you lose a guy that scored 30-plus touchdowns, it’s going to hurt you.”
