ASU accepts invitation to GoDaddy.com Bowl

Arkansas State is booked for a January trip to the Gulf Coast.

The Red Wolves accepted an invitation from the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Sunday to face Kent State in a Jan. 6 meeting at Ladd-Pebble Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

ASU (9-3, 7-1) earned the bid after securing back-to-back Sun Belt Conference championships on Saturday a 45-0 victory against Middle Tennessee at Liberty Bank Stadium in Jonesboro.

Last season, the Red Wolves lost 38-20 to Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl, with the Red Wolves led by an interim coach in David Gunn and only half of the ASU staff intact after Coach Hugh Freeze was hired by Ole Miss.

With a win against Kent State, who is ranked No. 25 in the AP Top 25 poll, the Red Wolves have a chance to secure their first bowl victory since the Pecan Bowl in 1970 and potentially and joining the Football Bowl Subdivision in 1992.

Kent State (11-2) won the MAC East Division, and enters with an efficient offense that finished No. 75 nationally (391.1 yards per game) but averaged 34.6 points per game.

The Golden Flashes, though, tout a solid ground attack, ranking No. 17 in the NCAA at 228.3 yards per game. Junior running back Dri Archer ranks No. 16 nationally with 1,352 yards and 15 touchdowns on 150 carries, while sophomore Trayion Durham ranks 23rd with 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns on 256 carries.

I know the boys were hoping for the Liberty Bowl and not Mobile again but you have to crawl before you walk. I wish them the very best. I know they'll do their best to represent the state of Arkansas well.

A victory in this bowl could land them in the Top 25.

I believe ASU will win this game. This year all the coaches are intact; not like last year when many had left for Ole Miss. It was evident ASU's execution against MTSU was almost flawless. Continuing to fine tune their schemes during bowl practices should make them even better. Maybe they can play a "perfect" game on January 6, 2013, and get some poll voter attention with an impressive victory. GO ASU!!!

Wow Glen, glad you could join us. Why did you even bother reading the article? Congratulations to the Red Wolves and Coach Malzahn.

Glen, go back into your hole. Congratulations to ASU players and coaches. The stadium wasn't the best last year but Mobile is great place to visit. It would be great if we packed in even more folks than we did last year.

Glenn is obviously one of those disheartened Hog fans who can't find anything else to do but criticize, or the only reason he watches football (or any sport for that matter) is to make a buck betting on the game. If gambling is his perspective, he is probably correct, most gamblers could care less about this game.

As a Red Wolf fan, I too am disappointed in the Mobile game, especially in light of what the New Orleans Bowl did...Wally was right, just call it the Lafayette Big Easy Bowl and invite them every year. I was not exicted about the prospect of going to Memphis...I hope a 6-6 Iowa State team brings about 15 fans to look for Elvis...at least you can get some fresh seafood in Mobile. The SunBelt needs to get a real tie-in to a game to send their champion to, or ASU needs to move elsewhere. pcritter is right though, we must crawl before we walk. We have to score a major victory over a ranked opponent at some point and bumping off Kent State can be a small start to relavance. Everyone must realize this bowl business is all about money, nothing else, and we could be sitting at home like La. Tech.

Proud of the Wolves and plan on being in Mobile!

Absolutely true, OutInTheSticks. I was really hoping for Memphis just because it is such a short drive from Jonesboro. Almost a home game. But a road trip will be fun too. Go Red Wolves! Arkansas is proud of you.

ASU is the number one team in the state and probably next year too. Just wish ESPN3 would quit the black outs.

Proud to be an ASU Red Wolf! I can't imagine being as miserable and sour as some people on this board are. :)
