Southaven, Miss., mayor indicted in tax-money case

By The Associated Press

This article was published December 18, 2012 at 1:47 p.m.

— A north Mississippi mayor accused of misusing taxpayer money has been indicted.

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis faces one count each of embezzlement, false pretense and making fraudulent statements.

The indictment says Davis made fraudulent statements in 2009 by claiming to have authorization to purchase a car leased by the city. The second count alleges he used city gas in his personal car. Count three is related to a $1,000 check paid to Davis from a city account.

Davis has been under scrutiny since November 2011, when the Mississippi auditor’s office told him to repay tens of thousands of dollars for improper billings, including $64 purportedly spent at a gay sex shop in Canada.

After those allegations, Davis announced that he is gay and said he and his wife had divorced.
