This article was published December 19, 2012 at 6:35 a.m.

— A 19-year-old driver from Booneville was killed Tuesday when his Jeep crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a truck, authorities said.

Arkansas State Police say it happened as John Daniel Phillips was driving a 2003 Jeep west on Arkansas 10 about 5 miles east of Danville in Yell County.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the Jeep crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound Freightliner truck head-on, according to a preliminary report.

Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene about half an hour after the collision.

The truck driver, identified as Victor T. Scrivner, 34, of Grapevine, was taken to Chambers Hospital in Danville with unspecified injuries.

Phillips was the 526th person to die in a traffic accident in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.

This last summer, while traveling through Tennessee, their highway signs reported the number highway deaths. With most of our major highways now having similar signs, why can't our highway department, or whom ever uses them, do something? I'm sure drivers seeing the death toll would be more attentive.

dinky... Are you assuming this 19 year old was not being 'attentive'??? We have no idea why he crossed the centerline and struck the truck. There could be dozens of reasons why that would/could happen.
