Tidwell Project marks 10th year of benefit for youth program

— It was a happy 10th anniversary for “Celebrate the Moments of the Season,” which took place Dec. 16 at The Peabody Little Rock hotel. The event was a benefit for the Tidwell Project Inc., which was organized to provide youth in economically disadvantaged communities with exposure to the performing art of dance.

Serving once again as co-chairmen were Susan and Dr. Alonzo Williams and Drs. Frances R. Harris and Joe L. Hargrove. Alyse Eady, morning anchor on KTHV-TV, Channel 11, and former television news anchor Pamela Smith served as masters of ceremonies.

C. Michael Tidwell, founder and artistic director of the Tidwell Project, introduced his dance troupe before their energetic performance. Tidwell was later presented a check for $350,000 — the result of a five-year fundraising campaign — to be used toward a new building for the project. Event sponsors were honored by board member Connie Curry.

The evening culminated in a mini-concert by R&B/ neo-soul singer Eric Benet, whose songs included “Georgie Porgie,” “You’re the Only One,” “Sometimes I Cry” and “Spend My Life With You” as well as “Harriet Jones” and “Real Love” from his new CD, The One.

Throughout the evening, guests dined on heavy hors d’oeuvres and libations and bid on silent auction items, including outerwear from Fletcher & Bensky Furs. Vocalist Nicki Parrish and her band, Kemistri, also performed.
