Inmates might pay for their jail stay in Garland County

— Jail inmates in Garland County may start paying a daily fee for the burden of being locked up.

A committee of the Garland County Quorum Court is considering a measure that would levy a fee of $15 per day and another that would charge inmates for any health care they receive.

If approved, the daily fee would be assessed along with fines, restitution and court costs that inmates are responsible for after a conviction.

If the medical care measure is approved, inmates would be billed $20 per visit to a doctor, dentist or nurse and would be responsible for a $10 co-pay for a prescription. The Sentinel-Record reports the measure says inmates won’t be denied health care if they can’t pay.

Let's see, $15.00 a day to stay in a place they don't want to be in. If the guy is destitute, how are the going to pay? Pay or go to jail? Oops, he's already there. Catch 22. Who is the genius that figured this out?
