— 100 YEARS AGO July 24, 1912

Everything is in readiness for the laying of the corner stone of the new Argenta High School building, which will take place at Fourth and Willow streets at 5 o’clock, Thursday afternoon. It is expected many of the fraternal and labor organizations of the city will participate in the parade, which will form at City park at 4 o’clock.

50 YEARS AGO July 24, 1962

Campaign sign vandals struck close at home yesterday. They broke off and removed a campaign sign from the front yard of Letcher Langford, who lives at 920 W. 2nd. Langford is a candidate for Pulaski representatives, Position 9. Langford, who said he had lost about 100 signs to vandals in various parts of Pulaski County during his campaign, said he is offering a $10 award for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

25 YEARS AGO July 24, 1987

About 50 citizens marched against Union Pacific Railroad on Thursday to protest shipments of toxic chemicals into the North Little Rock rail yard near their homes. The protesters included adults and children from the Eastgate and Dixie neighborhoods, many of whom had been evacuated because of derailments at the yard; members of the Arkansas Community Organization for Reform Now; and Ann Smith, a spokesman for the Environmental Congress of Arkansas.

Pulaski County Quorum Court members jumped into the ring in the verbal boxing match between the county-circuit clerk and the prosecuting attorney when they passed a resolution Tuesday night asking for a clean fight. “This resolution expresses that the Quorum Court would like for the elected officials in Pulaski County to treat each other with respect and try to solve problems with private, face-to-face conversations instead of publicly criticizing each other,” the resolution says. “Sometimes you’ve got to back off and look for compromise,” resolution sponsor Steve Goss said about the long-running feud between County-Circuit Clerk Carolyn Staley and Prosecuting Attorney Larry Jegley.
