LITTLE ROCK — 100 YEARS AGO July 27, 1912
The property owners on West Seventh street held a meeting last night at S.P. Cansler’s store, Seventh and Marshall streets, and discussed the advisability of improving West Seventh street from Victory to Denison street, by pavement. Mayor Charles E. Taylor, Superintendent Henry Levinson and E.A. Kingsley, county engineer, spoke to the property owners, and then several of them expressed their opinions, which indicated that they desire some kind of a permanent paving.
50 YEARS AGO July 27, 1962
Police didn’t appreciate the help William Dodson was trying to give them early today from a Southern Hotel balcony. Dodson, 37, whose address was listed on the police docket as Southern Hotel, 107 1-2 W. Markham, had gathered quite a following with his balcony scene until police arrived. Patrolman Faye Goodwin said Dodson was shouting at people down below and causing a disturbance. He was yelling at every car that passed and was “directing traffic,” the officer testified in Little Rock Municipal Court today. When police went to Dodson’s room, they said he came in from his perch. Goodwin said Dodson told them that if they didn’t go away “he was going to call the police.” 25 YEARS AGO July 27, 1987 EUREKA SPRINGS - Except for an increase in Arkansas State Police manpower, officials at Eureka Springs said Monday no extra measures had been taken to prepare for 500 members of Hell’s Angels who will congregate here next week. “We’re going to increase patrol from one car to about four cars,” said Capt. Larry Fletcher with the state police at Springdale. He added, however, “We really don’t expect any problems.” 10 YEARS AGO July 27, 2002
Gov. Mike Huckabee urged school administrators Friday to focus on the general goals laid out in his education plan and not what it would cost, an issue he again ducked in an interview after his speech. In his talk to the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators, Huckabee said the Next Step plan will cost “some more money,” but that’s not the most important matter.
