Consumer spending flat, but confidence improving

— Consumer spending was flat in June after a 0.1 percent drop in May and income rose 0.5 percent, the Commerce Department said Tuesday.

Americans cut back on spending this spring, reflecting rising uncertainty about the economy and jobs.

Consumer confidence rose in July after four months of declines. The Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index increased to 65.9, from 62.7 in June.
