Ozark man drowns in quarry

— The Johnson County sheriff’s office has said a 63-year-old Ozark man drowned while swimming in a rock quarry with friends.

The sheriff’s office said Leonard Gates was swimming Saturday afternoon in a private rock quarry when he briefly went under the water. Authorities say he was pulled from the water and witnesses administered CPR until emergency crews arrived.

The sheriff’s office said Gates was dead at the scene.

Authorities don’t yet know whether a medical condition caused Gates to slip below the water. His body has been sent to the State Crime Laboratory to determine cause of death.
