Flags to fly at half-staff in honor of fallen fireman

— Gov. Mike Beebe has ordered Arkansas flags to be flown at half-staff to honor a Jacksonville firefighter who died in the line of duty this week.

Capt. Donald L. Jones, 56, died Monday night after being struck by a motorist while working an accident on Highway 161 in Jacksonville. A second firefighter and a police officer were critically wounded in the incident and the driver, 47-year-old Bryce Allen, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Beebe issued the proclamation Thursday to have flags flown at half-staff on Friday.

"All Arkansas citizens owe Captain Jones a lasting debt of gratitude for his bravery and his heroism as we pay tribute to his faithful service and extend deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones," the proclamation states.

Jones was a 31-year veteran of the department. A candlelight vigil is planned in his honor Thursday night at the Arch Street Fire Department.
