Brown named All-American

After the most successful individual season in school history, Philander Smith guard Ken Brown is being recognized for his accomplishments.

The senior from St. Louis was named a first-team NAIA All-American earlier this week, after he averaged 31.9 points per game and helped lead the Panthers to a 15-15 record in their first season in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Brown’s scoring average led the NAIA. He shot 50.3 percent from the field (327 of 650), made 113 of 274 three-pointers (41.2 percent) and scored 959 points.

Brown was also named first-team all-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference and was named the conference’s Player of the Year.

BASEBALL

ASU loses on the road

Memphis junior Michael Wills limited Arkansas State to four hits in a 7-1 victory over the Red Wolves on Tuesday night at FedEx Park in Memphis.

Wills (1-0) struck out four and walked three. Arkansas State (11-9) used eight pitchers in the game, one each inning, with sophomore Cody Woodhouse starting and taking the loss after giving up a run in the first.

Memphis used a single from designated hitter Eli Hynes to drive in a first-inning run, then got an RBI double from center fielder Ford Wilson and a two-run single from left fielder Adam McClain in the second to build a 4-0 lead.

The Tigers (9-11) added a run in the fifth when Hynes was hit by a pitch and scored on a passed ball. Consecutive home runs from McClain and Hynes in the sixth stretched the Memphis lead to 7-0.

Arkansas State scored its only run in the seventh when catcher Stuart Levy bounced a double off the left-center wall to score left fielder Logan Uxa from first.

Right fielder Anthony Hecht went 2 for 3 to lead ASU. Mc-Clain, Hynes and third baseman Jacob Wilson all went 2 for 4 for Memphis.

SOFTBALL

Hendrix sweeps two

Hendrix defeated St. Olaf (Minn.) 3-0 and Worcester State (Mass.) 4-2 on Wednesday at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

In the victory over St. Olaf, Hendrix pitcher Ashley Halbert struck out four in a three-hit shutout, her fifth shutout of the season. Michaela Larabee went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored to lead Hendrix offensively.

Hendrix jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Worcester State, thanks to a two-run single by Paula Burr and a double by Tiffany Hubbard. Catcher Seana Corbin reached on an error in the fourth and later scored on a Larabee base hit. Second baseman Catelyn Gibbs went 2 for 3 with a stolen base for Hendrix, while Lauren Whitby allowed 1 earned run on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts to earn her second victory of the season.

MOTOR SPORTS

Mid-America Modified Championship at BMS

Batesville Motor Speedway in Locust Grove will host many of the region’s top modified drivers tonight, Friday night and Saturday night for the 16th annual IMCA Mid-America Modified Championship.

A complete card will be held each night with heat races, lastchance qualifiers and a feature race, each of which will pay $1,500 to win and $150 to start.

The grandstands will open at 5:30 p.m. each day and racing will start at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission each night is $10 for adults and children aged 11 and under get in free. Pit passes are $30 each night.
