— 100 YEARS AGO March 24, 1912

The State Museum Association, having for its purpose the preservation of the old statehouse, was organized yesterday, the meeting being held in the office in the old building formerly occupied by the State Land Commission. The movement for this organization was inaugurated by the Current Events Club of Little Rock, and the preliminary meeting yesterday was presided over by Judge Jacob Trieber.

50 YEARS AGO March 24, 1962 MALVERN - Congressman Dale Alford said here yesterday it is a tragedy that Congress is wasting its time trying to outlaw the poll tax - a qualification for voters required by only five states, including Arkansas. He was principal speaker at the regularmeeting of the Malvern Civitan Club. Alford said, “The Constitution clearly provides, not once, not twice, but three times that the determination of voting qualifications shall be solely in the power of the respective states.” 25 YEARS AGO March 24, 1987

Gov. Bill Clinton on Monday named RodneySlater of Little Rock as the first black appointee to the state Highway Commission. Slater, 32, who has been a special assistant to Clinton for minority and community affairs since 1983, will replace Dalton Farmer, 51, of Jonesboro. Farmer, head of Dalton Farmer Enterprises in Jonesboro, a commercial real estate development and leasing firm, told Clinton in a letter of resignation received Monday morning that he “must make a choice” between his business obligations and his duties as a highway commissioner.

A Vision Little Rock team that examined housing needs wants the city to champion low-income residents searching for affordable apartments and reasonable mortgages. “We, as a city, don’t need to force people to live in substandard housing,” said Sharlett Craig, who served as co-chairman of the 21-member Vision Little Rock housing work group. The group wants Little Rock to beef up its rental inspection program, make it easier for residents to get credit counseling and housing information, and conduct a study of the city’s housing.
