Officer shot in leg in standoff near UA

— A Fayetteville police officer was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire with a man at an apartment complex near the University of Arkansas campus Saturday night, police said.

Sergio Andrade, the man accused of shooting the officer, was arrested after a standoff of more than six hours on charges of attempted capital murder, aggravated assault, first-degree battery and committing a terroristic act, police said.

The officer, whose name was not released Sunday, was taken to Washington Regional Medical Center.

Fayetteville police spokesman Sgt. Craig Stout said he expected the officer to be released from the hospital by today.

Fayetteville police were called to the Bedford Loop Apartments, just west of the campus, shortly before 9 p.m. Saturday, after university police reported that they had found a vehicle they had attempted to stop on campus for traffic violations.

University police said they had seen the vehicle’s driver run into a second-floor apartment, Fayetteville police said.

After Fayetteville officers arrived, they heard a gunshot inside the apartment. A man, identified by police as Andrade, then came out, holding a black pistol, and fired several shots at the officers, hitting the Fayetteville officer just above the ankle.

Police returned fire, and Andrade went back inside the apartment, police said.

Police used loudspeakers to try to persuade Andrade to come out, Stout said.

About midnight, officers fired several rounds of tear gas into the apartment, but Andrade still did not exit, Stout said.

After obtaining a cell-phone number, police called Andrade and persuaded him to step out onto a walkway outside the apartment, Stout said. Once Andrade was outside, officers shot him with a stun gun, taking him into custody at 3:42 a.m., Stout said.

Andrade, 50, of Fayetteville was being held Sunday evening in the Washington County jail. Bail had not been set.
