Barricaded man fires at deputy, later surrenders

A suicidal man barricaded himself inside his Garland County home and at one point fired shots at a deputy before surrendering, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

According to a statement from the Garland County Sheriff's Office, it started shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday when deputies went to the home, 822 Vaughn Road, to investigate a report of a man threatening to commit suicide with a firearm.

Police on the way spotted the man driving, but he returned to the home and opened fire on deputies as he exited his vehicle, the statement said. There was no report of injuries.

The man reportedly then barricaded himself inside the home, leaning chairs against his doors and placing firearms and a gas can near them. A female relative in the home got out and hid in a crawl space, police said.

Negotiators and the SWAT team responded and the man ultimately came out and sat on his front porch after about 2 hours. He was taken into custody there.

Authorities say the man has "preexisting medical conditions," though no further details were provided.

Charges have not yet been filed.
