— 100 YEARS AGO March 29, 1912

E.R. Rossen was arraigned yesterday before United States Commissioner W.S. Allen on the charge of sending an unsuitable letter through the post office. Rossen recently filed a suit for divorce against his wife, Mabel Rossen, in the Chancery Court. A few days ago it is charged, he mailed at Dallas, Tex., a letter to his wife, containing matter which the federal statutes prohibit from going through the mails. The letter was received by Mrs. Rossen at Helena, where she is living, and after receiving and reading it delivered it to the federal authorities. Rossen was arrested.

50 YEARS AGO March 29, 1962

Harry Parkin resigned today as chairman of the highway commission in order to bid tomorrow on 15 state printing contracts he lost because of his state position. The State Supreme Court ruled several weeks ago that because Parkin was president of the Parkin Printing Co., and because of a provision in the constitution, the 15 contracts awarded to him last July were invalid.

25 YEARS AGO March 29, 1987

Little Rock Police Department officers were at fault in more than half of the 80 auto accidents involving patrol cars last year, statistics show. But Lt. Horace Walters of the department’s training division said these numbers were not unusually high considering how much the city has grown and that officers spend an average of about six to seven hours a day driving. Walters said the number of accidents was also higher last year than in the past because the department has more officers with less than two years’ experience.

10 YEARS AGO March 29, 2002 FAYETTEVILLE - Chancellor John White passed out Heath candy bars, Athletic Director Frank Broyles called the Hogs, and Stan Heath gave praise to Nolan Richardson after being named his replacement Thursday at the University of Arkansas. After one season as coach at Kent State in Ohio and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight, Heath was named the Razorbacks basketball coach in a nationally televised news conference from Richardson’s former palace, Walton Arena.
