— 100 YEARS AGO March 30, 1912

Secretary of State Hodges yesterday received a letter from the Pine Bluff chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution stating that the chapter intends to present a handsome flag to the battleship Arkansas, and asking whether or not Arkansas has a state flag. Mr. Hodges replied that there is no Arkansas state flag.

50 YEARS AGO March 30, 1962

School authorities in the three school districts within Pulaski County were uncertain today as to what effect, if any, a new administration statement on federal school aid to segregated schools would have. The statement said segregated schools would lose the federal aid given to schools serving children “who live on federal property.” Pulaski (Rural) Supt. E.F. Dunn took the position the county district is observing the law because all of the Negro children living on the Little Rock Air Force base are in elementary grades and 18 are in the Air Base School (integrated) which the federal government has leased from the county district which it then hired to operate that particular school.

25 YEARS AGO March 30, 1987

Otter Creek parents dissatisfied with elementary school student assignments continued their attacks Sunday against the Little Rock School District and its desegregation plan. About 70 residents of Otter Creek, Yorkwood, Shiloh and Wakefield subdivisions, heartened somewhat because U.S. District Judge Henry Woods took the district to task Friday, met at the Otter Creek Clubhouse to discuss the shortcomings of the district’s controlled choice plan.

Beginning in May, sheriffs across the state finally will be partially reimbursed for housing a backlog of state inmates in county jails. The state Board of Correction and Community Punishment voted Friday to accept a surprise $5 million offered last week by Gov. Mike Huckabee to help pay off the state’s many delinquent jail bills. In recent months, sheriffs across the state warned they were facing deeper budget cuts that would diminish their ability to serve and protect the public.
