Dog owners consider downtown park features

Dog owners met today to discuss adding amenities, such as a splash pad, a bathing station and wireless internet, to a proposed downtown dog park.

The MacArthur Park Working Group, a volunteer organization, is evaluating interest about adding amenities to a section of MacArthur Park that may be converted into a dog park.

"Our vision is more than just a plain vanilla dog park," working group member Keith Canfield said. "If we think big, we think about a dogie version of the Peabody splash pad. We should dream big."

Basic design elements — a chain perimeter, two entrances, a pet waste station and watering areas — will cost 30,000 dollars, he said.

Attendees voted on what extra features they would like to see in the park from a list that included, among other things, an agility course, public art, a paved path inside the fenced area and lighting options.

The dog park will be an area of approximately two acres bounded by Interstate 630 on the south side and the Pulaski County Lane, which is under construction, on the north side.
