Brush fire claims 100 acres in southwest Arkansas

— A Texarkana brush fire claimed about 100 acres and burned as almost all of Arkansas is at risk of wildfires.

The Sunday fire burned a barn but no homes were damaged. No one was hurt.

The fire started off Highway 82 at about 4:40 p.m. and firefighters needed three hours to bring it under control.

Texarkana Fire Chief Ginger Lee told the Texarkana Gazette the cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known but there was no indication of foul play. Lee says conditions are so dry that wildfires can start easily.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission says the state is under a moderate danger of wildfires. The U.S. Drought monitor shows northeast Arkansas to be in a moderate drought, while almost all the rest of the state is abnormally dry.
