— Delta State’s Rushing to lead UCA women

Central Arkansas will announce the hiring of Delta State’s Sandra Rushing as its new head women’s basketball coach in a news conference at 3 p.m. today.

Rushing resigned from Delta State Wednesday night, the school announced in a release. She was one of two candidates interviewed by UCA Athletic Director Brad Teague and was on the Conway campus on Wednesday. Sugar Bears associate head coach Tony Kemper was interviewed on Tuesday by Teague.

When contacted by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on Wednesday, Teague would not comment. Rushing could not be reached for comment, but said in a Delta State release that the move to UCA was “an extremely difficult decision, but one that was necessary at this time in my career.”

Rushing, from Biloxi, Miss., has been at Delta State for 10 seasons, compiling a 254-57 record, and led the Lady Statesmen to five Gulf South Conference championships and seven consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. Before arriving at Delta State, Rushing was at Texas-El Paso (1990-2001) and Hesnderson State (2001-2002).

Former UCA Coach Matt Daniel was introduced as the new head coach at Marshall University on Tuesday after four seasons in which he led the Sugar Bears to three consecutive 21-victory seasons and a Southland Conference regular-season title last season. Daniel, from Jonesboro, was 72-50 at UCA.

The news conference will be held in the Hall of Fame room at Estes Stadium in Conway. The public is invited to attend.
