U.S. businesses added 158,000 jobs in October

Payroll provider ADP said Friday that businesses added 158,000 jobs in October.

ADP said it saw growth in construction, transportation and utilities, financial activities and services. Manufacturing was the only sector that lost jobs.

The report only covers hiring in the private sector, so it excludes government job growth. Also, this is the first month under ADP’s new method for calculating employment numbers.

The Labor Department was set to offer a more complete picture of October hiring Friday.

Meanwhile, U.S. worker productivity grew at the same modest rate this summer as in spring, a sign that companies may be nearing the limits on how much output they can get from their employees.

The Labor Department said Friday that productivity increased at a modest 1.9 percent annual rate from July through September, matching the April-June quarter rate. Labor costs fell at a 0.1 percent rate after having risen at a 1.7 percent rate in the second quarter.

Productivity is the amount of output per hour of work.
