Arkansas candidates make final pitch before election

— Candidates are fanning across Arkansas making their final pitches to voters before an election that could hand Republicans a majority in the state Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction.

Both parties on Monday kept their focus on dozens of state House and Senate races that could be keys to a majority in either chamber as they neared the election. Republicans are aiming for a majority in both chambers of the state Legislature and a sweep of Arkansas’ four congressional seats in Tuesday’s election.

Election officials predict that 65 percent of the state’s 1.6 million registered voters will cast a ballot in the election. More than 406,000 voters had cast a ballot early through Saturday. The election will also feature three ballot measures, including a proposal to legalize medical marijuana.
