Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/STEPHEN B. THORNTON -- South Carolina's Aldrick Fordham sacks Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson in the second quarter during their game Saturday afternoon in South Carolina.

John L. Smith - South Carolina Postgame

Arkansas coach John L. Smith recaps the Razorbacks' 38-20 loss to South Carolina on Saturday.

— Connor Shaw passed for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns as No. 8 South Carolina beat Arkansas 38-20 Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium.

The Gamecocks seized control of the game on Shaw's 42-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Ellington with 1:30 remaining in the second quarter to take a 21-10 halftime lead.

South Carolina added a 41-yard field goal by Adam Yates on the first possession of the third quarter and extended the lead to 31-10 on D.J. Swearinger's 69-yard interception return touchdown three plays later.

Mike Davis added a 2-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to push South Carolina's lead to 38-13. The Gamecocks snapped a three-game losing streak to Arkansas, beating the Razorbacks for the first time since 2008.

Arkansas tied the game on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Wilson to Keon Hatcher early in the second quarter and pulled with 14-10 on the first of two Zach Hocker field goals, but could get no closer.

South Carolina (8-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) outscored the Razorbacks 24-10 in the game's final 32 minutes. A late, eight-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Wilson cut the Gamecocks' lead to 38-20.

Penalties and turnovers hurt the Razorbacks in the first half. Wilson, who threw two interceptions for the second straight conference game, had a 39-yard pass to Cobi Hamilton nullified by an illegal formation penalty on the first drive of the game, and running back Dennis Johnson lost a fumble at the South Carolina 5 early in the second quarter.

The Razorbacks fell to 4-6 overall this season, including 2-4 in SEC games. Arkansas must win its final two games against Mississippi State and LSU to become eligible for a postseason bowl game.

Sad and so un-necessary. You could see that the talent is there but because of the bad decisions by Jeff Long and awful coaching by JLS and the two Pauls, the team has been mis-managed. The players and the fans are paying the price for the sins of Petrino, the outlandish decisions by Jeff Long and terrible coaching.
For the first time in Arkansas history, ASU is now the best football team in Arkansas. And there is no question they have the better coaches in place.
Gus has done it in less than a season. Jeff Long has taken the football program to the bottom and the other shoes have yet to drop.

Talent really is not there except in spots like Hamilton, Wilson and Johnson. Defense seems to be playing better except so obviously outmanned. Offensive coaching is a joke; need to clean house there for sure.

I think we need to see what Long does here. My opinion is that he'd have hired Gus in March if Gus would have left ASU. Gus said he wouldn't. I personally wouldn't be surprised to see Gus hired in December. Or at least have a serious offer made to him.

Coaching is pathetic, Long has taken this programs to the bottom. Heck, look at what happened at Penn State!! Look at their record, we can not lay all the blame on Petrino. Lay the blame on 1) ) Long 2) J.L. "I am lost as a goose" Smith 3) Paul "Predictable" Petrino (Offense is so predicatble) 4) remainder of coaching staff. Just an opinion, Tyler Wilson is 2nd best QB in ARK after watching ASU thur. night. Maybe 3rd or 4th best in SEC. Can not make short passes. Slow as Christmas. Been hit so much he is gun shy, most an o-line problem, some is his lack of mobility. You can not stand in the pocket for 5 secs. in SEC. Take away his 2-5 yard passes and see what his rating is?? He locks in on Coby!! He is going to get Coby killed!!!! Proud of Freshman LB's today- played hard, got burned but, kept on fighting. Jeff Long should face those of us who have put our hard earned money into program, from outrageous parking pass fees and rules to everything else that he has raised price on. Oh yeah, and PEPSI, too! The he creates this disaster, what a leader.
