Arkansas achievers

— Helen Guenter, associate librarian at the Taylor Library and Technology Center at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Arkansas Library Association. Guenter, a member of the UAM staff since 1982, is the associate librarian for serials and reference.

Amy Johnson, executive director of the Arkansas Access to Justice Commission, has received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders Award for 2012. She has raised more than $2.1 million to support the provision of free legal aid to lowincome people, served on an advisory committee that oversaw the formation of the state’s first hospital-based medicallegal partnership, and helped establish the Harmony Health Clinic in Little Rock, a free clinic for the working poor.

Nathan Farley of Heber Springs, a student at Arkansas State University-Beebe, has been named an Academic All-Star by the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges. He is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in welding technology.

Thomas Green, a welding instructor, received the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges. He has been the face of the ASU-Heber Springs Welding Department since its inception in 2004.

Candace Gross, Assistant Registrar at ASU-Beebe since 2006, received the Outstanding Staff Award from the Arkansas Association of Two-Year Colleges.

Michael Hutsell of Searcy has been named Outstanding Alumni for ASU-Beebe for the year. He is president of First Security Bank, where he has worked since 1989. He attended ASU-Beebe and graduated from ASU-Jonesboro with a Bachelor of Science in accounting.

Sam Scott of Little Rock has received the Regent’s Scholarship to attend Southeast Missouri State University for the2013-2014 academic year. He is the son of Shan and Joy Scott and is a senior at North Little Rock High School West.

Dr. Sherry Field, dean of the College of Education at Arkansas Tech University, has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Jean Dresden Grambs Research in Social Studies Award by the National Council for the Social Studies. Field was chosen for the award based on her paper “Elementary and Secondary Social Studies: An Imperative for Teaching and Research.” Kelsey Gage of Heber Springs has received the Lillian Barton Scholarship at Arkansas State University for the fall semester. She is a senior studyingearly childhood education and plans to graduate early in December 2013. She is the daughter of Donald Gage and the late Barbara Gage.
