Israel has right to defend itself, Obama says

By The Associated Press

This article was published November 18, 2012 at 10:47 a.m.

U.S. President Barack Obama, center, and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra acknowledge each other at a joint news conference at the Government House in Bangkok, Thailand, Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012.

— President Barack Obama said Israel has a right to defend itself from missiles being aimed at the country by militants in the Gaza Strip.

Obama said "no country on earth would tolerate missiles raining down" on its people and said any effort to resolve the conflict in Gaza "starts with no missiles being fired into Israel's territory."

Obama's comments come as Israeli strikes hit two media centers in the Gaza Strip on Sunday as violence continues to escalate. Palestinian militants meanwhile fired at least one more long-range rocket at Tel Aviv, the fourth day in a row the city has come under fire.

The rocket was intercepted by Israel's "Iron Dome" missile defense system.

Obama spoke at a news conference Sunday in Bangkok. He's on a three-country tour of Asia.

No mention of the Palestinians having any right to defend themselves. As I recall didn't this begin with Israel assassinating a Hamas leader in Gaza? Seems I recall reports that said this was the 6th try at assassinating him, and in the first five tries most of his family has been killed off ( including his children) over a period of a couple of years.

Gee, I guess I just haven't found that side of the story , surely the ADG would have made some mention if not Obama.

Have any of you wondered why all our Politicians fall all over themselves claiming that Israel has a right to defend themselves whenever they kill someone, like the shooting of a Palestinian 12 year old playing soccer just two days before this?

President Obama, where can I find your statement that the 12 year old boy had a "right" to life.

This is getting to be routine - doesn't or hasn't Israel pulled this caper immediately after a U S Presidential election for at least the last four or five election cycles? Do they need to get the new or re-elected President to publicly state "Israel has a right to defend itself" as soon as possible after the votes are counted? Maybe he could agree to to do this and save the need to shoot fish in the Gaza fishbowl?

I believe that the United States is being too subservient to Israel. I don't remember the vote about whether or not the U S should condone the largest outdoor prison on earth.

Both the Israelis and Palestinians have acted badly toward one another. The cycle of hate and prejudice is not easily broken. Wise people treat their neighbors well.
