Children’s Hospital gets $1 million for endowed chair

— The Schmieding Foundation of Springdale announced Tuesday a $1 million gift to Arkansas Children’s Hospital that will establish an endowed chair in pediatric hematology and oncology, the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Foundation said.

The endowed chair, named for produce broker and philanthropist Lawrence H. Schmieding, will fund research, clinical support and education toward the care of cancer and blood-disorder patients, the foundation said in a statement.

The full donation will be earmarked to support the chair holder’s clinical practice and research, the foundation said.

“We are just so happy we can do this in Lawrence’s memory,” wife Helen Schmieding said in the statement. “We want to do anything we can to help children across the state, including those battling cancer and blood disorders. We have the utmost confidence in Arkansas Children's Hospital and we are thrilled to make this gift.”

Children’s treats more than 90 percent of the state’s children diagnosed with cancer, sickle-cell disease, hemophilia and other blood diseases, according to the foundation.
