The robber wrote his name on a receipt and left it at the business, according to a police report.

Officers found Uganda T. Evans, 33, of 1311 W. First, Apt. 78, at the apartment complex where he lives after Evans was identified as a suspect in the robbery of Day and Nite, 1207 W. Hillsboro.

He was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated robbery.

A store clerk said Evans approached the counter with a beer just before 8 p.m., and when she quoted the price of the beverage and asked him to pay for it, he lifted his shirt, revealing a pistol in his waistband.

After the receipt for the beer printed, the clerk said Evans wrote his name on it.

He also reportedly wrote, “Bet, 2nd times don’t pay,” and “No game and see me ASAP” on the receipt.

The clerk said Evans left the receipt on the counter, exited the store without paying for the beer and headed west on foot. Officers said they viewed the store’s surveillance video and saw Evans quickly raise his sweatshirt, flashing the grip of a handgun in his waistband, and scribble on the receipt.

Police said they received information that Evans lived nearby in Haygood Neal Garden Apartments and while canvassing the area, they saw Evans standing behind a building.

Officers said they approached Evans and he began walking away, dropping something next to the building.

Evans complied with officers’ commands to drop to the ground and he was taken into custody without incident, according to a police report.

Police said they recovered a revolver on the ground, about eight feet from the spot where Evans had been lying. They noted that the gun was not loaded.
