Second thoughts

— Losing out a winning proposition

Alabama Coach Nick Saban doesn’t think Florida should benefit from not playing in the SEC Championship Game, like his team did last year when it made the BCS National Championship Game despite not playing for the league title.

Saban was asked by the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel what he thought about the loser of the SEC Championship Game likely not making a BCS bowl while the Gatorsprobably go to the Sugar Bowl.

“It’s not really a great scenario,” Saban said. “You play your way into the championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division. It doesn’t seem quite right. I don’t feel good about it for our football team or theirfootball team [Georgia].”

Florida Coach Will Muschamp had a solution to the problem.

“Well, I can switch and go toAtlanta,” Muschamp said. “If he doesn’t want to go to Atlanta and play the ’Dogs. Be careful what you ask for, Nick.” Bellyflop

Rocco Mediate has a simple reason for believing the U.S. Golf Association and Royal & Ancient Golf Club shouldn’t announce a ban against the belly-putter during a teleconference today.

“It doesn’t make you better,” the PGA Tour member said. “If it was the way to go, 144 guys would use it. ... And even guys that do use it don’t make every putt - because if they did, I’d be using one.” Lesser violation

“Two Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks are facing four-game suspensions for violating league policy on the use of performanceenhancing drugs,” writes Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald. “The Seahawk players are lucky. If instead their shirts were untucked during a game, they would’ve been suspended six weeks.” Buckeyes band

Also from Brad Dickson: “After finishing 12-0, there’s an outsidechance Ohio State will wind up No. 1 in the AP rankings. If that happens, the NCAA asked that the Buckeye marching band dot the ‘i’ in ‘embarrassing.’ ” Sign of respect?

Kansas Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles has caused a stir after asking for Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning’s autograph following Sunday’s game in Kansas City, Mo.

Local television station KCTV aired footage of Charles waiting for Manning’s signature after the Chiefs’ 17-9 loss. Charles told the TV station he was getting the autograph for his mom.

The story was picked up by several national media outlets, some of whom argued it was in poor taste to ask for an opponent’s autograph after a loss, even though it’s common for professional athletes in most sports to exchange jerseys and autographs.

Houston Texans running back Arian Foster tweeted that he got Charles’ autograph at the 2010 Pro Bowl and that he exchanges with players nearly “every game.”

Charles tweeted Tuesday: “Thank for the support and relax on the P Manning story, just two warriors showing each other respect.”Quote

of the day “He’s a bad man.

I mean that as a compliment.”
