Northside utilizes 2nd-quarter blitz

— Fort Smith Northside’s coaches spent little time deliberating their options with a chance to initiate a running clock during a 56-20 victory over Little Rock Hall.

After recovering a fumble at the Hall 38, the Bears dialed up a simple call with 17 seconds left in the first half: A post route for wide receiver Keyshawn Dorsey.

Quarterback Gray Stanton lofted a throw down the seam for Dorsey for a touchdown, initiating the sportsmanship rule during a stretch of 28 consecutive second-quarter points for the Grizzles in 7A/6A-Central Conference rout at Scott Field in Little Rock.

“You want to put yourself in position to get off the field faster,” Northside Coach Darrell Henry said. “They had the misfortune with the turnover there. We had the chance, and we took it.”

Northside (3-6, 3-3) found itself entangled in a tighter than-expected affair after Hall (0-8, 0-6) pulled within 21-12 when running back Terry Smith raced 34 yards for a touchdown with 7:02 left in the second quarter.

The Grizzlies, who rolled up 375 yards of total offense, outscored Hall 28-0 over the final seven minutes of the half.

Running back Nigel Spears scored from 7 yards out on the next drive for a 28-12 lead with 4:57 left in the first half. A drive later, Stanton, who threw for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns on 10 of 12 passing, found wide receiver Kaden Woodard over the middle for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 2:33 to go in the second quarter.
