Jail worker arrested after 28 cats found dead in fire

A Garland County jail employee has been arrested on dozens of misdemeanor charges after 28 cats were found dead in a fire at a house he owns, authorities said.

David Smith turned himself in Wednesday after a warrant was issued charging him with 39 counts each of cruelty to animals and violation of the Arkansas rabies act.

The number of charges reflect the 28 cats found dead Monday morning inside the Garland County residence, at 317 Northgate St., as well as 11 cats that survived the fire.

Smith was released later Monday after posting $1,000 bond.
