Before the movie deluge ...

Awards hunting season officially opens this week with the arrival of Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master in Arkansas theaters. The film has divided critics — most love it, but some have found it ponderous. Count our Piers Marchant among the majority (for once). In this week’s MovieStyle, he writes that Anderson “has crafted a superbly willful film that will likely confound your expectations, no matter what they might have been.”

The news is also pretty good for Trouble With The Curve, the new Clint Eastwood movie that Eastwood didn’t direct. Dan Lybarger reports that Eastwood protege Robert Lorenz “has wisely decided” to let his expert cast do their work and concentrate on “keep[ing] the camera in focus,” which is “more than some auteurs seem able to do these days.”

For his part, MoveStyle editor delivers reviews of Bachelorette, the faith-based Unconditional and Julie Delpy’s 2 Days in New York. He’s also writing reviews of End of Watch and For a Good Time Call for the Blood, Dirt & Angels website. Oh, and Dredd 3D powers into the cineplexes as well. Word is, it’s pretty good too.
