Fort Smith officer on leave after shooting man

FORT SMITH — Fort Smith police say an officer is on routine administrative leave after he shot a man during a traffic stop Sunday.

Police say Officer Brandon Djordjevic tried to stop a car early Sunday that was driven by a 31-year-old man. Police say the man refused to cooperate with the officer and tried to flee.

Fort Smith police say Djordjevic opened fire after he saw the driver reach for something under his seat. The gunfire hit the driver in the right leg.

Police say the driver was taken to a hospital for treatment and that they expect to arrest him on suspicion of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, among other charges.

In November 2011, Djordjevic struck and injured a 14-year-old girl with his patrol car in north Fort Smith. Djordjevic said he was driving 30 to 35 mph and didn’t see the girl until the car struck her, according to a police accident report at the time. Djordjevic was tested for drugs and alcohol after the accident, as is standard procedure, but wasn't cited or suspended.
