MIRIAM HATCHER LoPORTO, 79, went to be with our Lord onMonday, April 1, 2013. Miriam was born August 6, 1933 in Sanford, Florida to parents, Arthur and Maurine Hatcher. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Frank LoPorto and five children, Salvatore LoPorto II (Ann Marie) of Altamonte Springs, Florida, Maureen Smith (Dent) of Lexington, Ky., Timothy LoPorto of North Little Rock, Lisa LoPorto (Larry) of Columbia, Mo.and Concetta Hall (David) of Little Rock; sister, Joy Williams of Nashville, Ga.; and five grandchildren, Jimmy and Maria LoPorto, Faye Smith, Michelle and Katie Hall, and Rachel Epps (step-granddaughter).

She was an original member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Little Rock, Ark. She was active in Cursillio and Kairos Outside for six years and active in the charismatic movement, all as a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Casselberry, Florida. He served as a Eucharistic minister and worked with bereavement ministries throughout her life. She was loved by all those who met her and touched many lives.

The Holy Rosary will be said at Christ the King Catholic Church, Wednesday evening, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. HELEN WARZEL MOTLEY, 97, of Little Rock went to be with her Lord on March 30, 2013. She is preceded in death by her loving husband; George Clarence Motley; son, Dr. George Ronald Motley and three brothers, Thaddeus (Ted) Warzel, Boleslaw (Buck) Warzel and Charles (Charlie) Warzel.

YOUNG MADISON ORSBURN, 96, of North Little Rock died March31, 2013. He was born at Okolona, Arkansas the son of Madison Monroe and Mattie Eleanor Young Orsburn. His employment spanned a period of 46 years, with 32 of those years with theArkansas Rehabilitation Services and 38 years devoted to theservice for the handicapped. He retired from the Rehabilitation Services in 1981. Work with theService began in 1950 as a counselor in the Forth Smith office. In 1955 he was promoted to supervisor of the 31 county Western Arkansas areas. In 1967 he was promoted to Administrator, Physical Restoration, of the Little Rock state office. He set up the operating procedures for the Arkansas Rehabilitation Services/ Arkansas Kidney Disease Commission joint program to serve end-stage renal disease cases. As that program’s first Administrator, coupled with his rehabilitation work, he served until his retirement in 1981. The kidney disease program was the first of its kind in the United States.

Young graduated valedictorian from Okolona High School and received a BA degree from Henderson State Teacher’s College, now Henderson State University at Arkadelphia, Arkansas. A MS degree in Education/Counselor Education was completed at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Advance courses in Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation were completed at New York University. Upon graduating from Separation-Classification School Adjutant General’s Department, he was assigned by the U.S. Army as a WWII Counselor separating injured veterans from service. Other training included: Management in Rehabilitation, Oklahoma State University, Prosthetics-Orthotics, University of California, Los Angeles, and other training in the use of Medical Consultants in Rehabilitation. From 1945-1950 he was Assistant Chief of the Advisement & Guidance, and Occupational Rating Partner Veterans Administration, Little Rock. Prior to WWII he was Principal at Delight Public Schools, Superintendent of Central Nevada County Public Schools, followed by two years as an administrator with the War Relocation Authority relocating Japanese Americans who had been interned in the Jerome and Rowher Centers. It was his strong conviction that the displacement of the loyal Japanese Americans, during the WWII years, was an injustice unprecedented in the annals of our American history.

In 1974, as a member of the National Institute of Rehabilitation Issues, the lead study group for the Rehabilitation Services Administrations, he dealt with problems of rehabilitating the severally handicapped.

In 1975, he was Chairman of the Prime Study Group that approached the influence of Consumer Involvement in Rehabilitation. In 1976, as National Chairman of the Institute, he led studies on the Homebound Severely Handicapped, Utilization of Institute Publications, and the Role of Facilities in Rehabilitation. All of these studies were published and made available to state rehabilitation programs.

Orsburn completed a national survey on end-stage renal disease clients for the 50 state Rehabilitation Administrator’s Council, and served as the Arkansas representative to the Regional Advisory Council, Texas Institute of Rehabilitation and Research, Houston, Texas. He was president, Region VI, National Rehabilitation Association, and a life member of that organization as well as the Arkansas chapter. He belonged to the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association; was secretary, Arkansas Retired Teachers Housing, Inc., vice president of the board of the Museum of Automobiles, Petit Jean Mountain. Other affiliations included: president, Mid-America Old Time Car Club, the Fort Smith Antique Car Club, and the Arkansas Antique Car Club, Little Rock.The 2009 annual car show at the Museum of Automobiles honored Young for his dedication and service to the Mid-America Club. He was a past vice president of the Fort Smith Exchange Club, a member of Belle Point Lodge, Fort Smith and a 32nd degree mason of the Western Arkansas Scottish Rite for over 58 years.

His name and career summary are entered as a charter honoree in the special edition of the National Distinguished Registry, Medical and Vocational Rehabilitation, for service to the handicapped. He was the recipient of the prestigious Voyle Scurlock award, the top Southwest Region honor for outstanding leadership in service to the handicapped.

As a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church, North Little Rock, Ark., he served on the administrative board, the board of trustees, treasure, and as president and teacher of the George Martin Sunday School Class. Many years were spent on other Methodist church boards and as Adult School Superintendent, Chairman of church board, scoutmaster, and president of the Men’s Club, Fort Smith Methodist. He was a certified Lay speaker. Love of family, friends, and his church were paramount in his life.

Among his hobbies, the restoration of antique automobiles was his favorite. To restore an old automobile to its original state was a joy to him. He was a member of the original group that set up a non-profit unit to incorporate and establish The Museum of Automobiles the successor to the Winthrop Rockefeller Museum atop Petit Jean Mountain.

Young’s wonderful wife, Lucille, of 67 years preceded him in death. He is survived by four daughters: Patricia Reinhardt, (Nelson, deceased), Cecillia Gelzine (Joe) both of Little Rock, Ellen Brown (Jim) of North Little Rock, Martha Best (Rob) of Sherwood; eight grandchildren: Charlotte Downs, Nicole Held (Brad), Angela Gelzine Staerk (Robert), Craig Reinhardt, Jennifer Morrison (Mike), Stephanie Bearden (Tim), Lisa Raney, Kyle Brown and step-children, Leigh Austin (Aaron), Beau Best (Franziska), James Brown (Rosa), Debbie Fahlsing (David); 14 great-grandchildren: Michaela, Michael, Shelby, and Bradshaw Held, Zachary and Emily Staerk, Madison Bearden, Samantha Morrison, Franky and Chirstina Brown, Natalie and Heather Smith, Noah Best, and Nate Austin.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday April 4th, 2013 in the sanctuary of Lakewood United Methodist Church with Rev. Richard Lancaster officiating under the direction ofGriffin Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Griffin Leggett-Rest Hills Memorial Park. TACY STONE REED, 87, a longtime resident of 225 N.

Mississippi Avenue in Little Rock, Arkansas, died peacefully in her home on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Reed was a native of Conway, Arkansas where she was born to Joseph Clem Stone and Virgie Malitta King Stone on December 17, 1925. She was the youngest of five children born to the couple.

Mrs. Reed attended ConwayPublic Schools graduating from Conway High School in 1943. Following high school she began nurses training in Little Rock at St. Vincent Infirmary, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1946. It was a couple of years into her career that she met the love of her life, Orval L. Reed, as she was attending his mother who was in the hospital following minor surgery. The two began dating and soon fell in love resulting in their February 18, 1948 marriage. The young couple made their home in Little Rock and spent the next 20 years raising their two daughters who ultimately presented them with five grandsons.

During her early nursing career she worked at various facilities including St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas State Hospital. Later she joined the Pulaski County Health Department as a public health nurse where she was employed from 1956 until her retirement as Nurse Supervisor in 1980.

After a few years of retirement, Mrs. Reed’s work ethic got the best of her, and she joined the American Red Cross in a part time position as a traveling nurse who traveled the state in the Red Cross travel bus collecting blood donations. Following several years in this position, she joined her husband’s insulation business as office manager where she remained until her second retirement in 1988. At that time she fully invested in being an active and loving grandmother thoroughly enjoying her five grandsons. She enjoyed many adventures and travels with them during these years. She was their number one cheerleader at their various sports activities.

Mrs. Reed was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing on the Arkansas River with her husband and family. In the 1950’s Mrs. Reed and her husband joined Trinity United Methodist Church where they spent many enjoyable Sunday mornings sitting with their “pew buddies” at the early service.

In addition to her late husband, Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings, Nola Stone and Jesse Stone, both of Conway, and John Stone of Green Cove Springs, Florida. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frances S. Meyer of Little Rock, two daughters, Vicki Reed Hall (Buddy), of Little Rock, Deborah Goldie Hess crack), of North Canton, Ohio, five grandsons, Robert Goldie, (Nancy) of North Canton, Ohio, Michael Goldie (Krista), of Canton, Ohio, John Moody of Little Rock, Reed Moody of Washington, D.C., and Lawson Moody, of Little Rock.She also leaves behind six great granddaughters, Celeste, Samantha, Honorae, Olivia, Alyssa, and Anna, and two great grandsons, Kobe and Tate. Mrs. Reed is also survived by seven nieces, Marilyn Thomas, Patti Eskola, Susan Fine, Kay Hanson, Janet Stone-Erdman, Marie Jones, and Lanelta Stone.

The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at Hospice Home Care for their gentle professionalism, and for Mrs. Kina Hayes, professional caregiver, for her gentle and loving attendance of our mother in her final days.

Tacy Reed will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her, and she will be remembered especially for her warm, sweet smile and her adventurous spirit. She will be laid to rest in Pine Crest Memorial Park following a 1 p.m. memorial service on Friday, April 5, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Little Rock. SANDY L. SANDERS, 65, of North Little Rock passed away Monday,April 1, 2013. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam and was a Purple Heart recipient. He attended First United Methodist Church and Lakewood Methodist Church inNorth Little Rock. He was a retired Sales Representative and a founding member of the Non-profit Organization, Friends of Recovery.

VAN H. WHITE, 82, of Little Rock, went to be with our Heavenly Father on April 1, 2013. He was born in Little Rock on December 22, 1930 to Harold G. and Willie Haller White and was a member of Winfield United Methodist Church.

He graduated with honors from North Little Rock High School in 1948 and played the trumpet in the high school band. He started his college education at the Universityof Arkansas at Fayetteville, and continued at the College of the Ozarks before entering the University of Arkansas School of Pharmacy, earning his Pharmacy degree in 1953. Van filled countless prescriptions and provided medical advice to his loyal customers at various pharmacies. He opened his own business, Frick’s Drug Store in October, 1966. He retired in 1985 from Magic Mart Pharmacy. In the fall of 1954, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and was on active duty until 1956-which included a year in Germany in service as a medic-followed by his discharge in August of 1962.

Van dearly loved his family. He always made it clear to his children that they could come to him with any question or problem, no matter the subject. He would listen patiently and give the best answer or advice he knew. He taught his children the importance of God, work ethics, responsibility and honesty. As a parent, he learned from his mistakes and was never ashamed to apologize when he knew he was wrong. He loved all animals and was known to feed stray cats, raccoons, squirrels and opossum that would venture into his yard. Just several months ago, he took in a stray pregnant cat. He kept the mother cat and her babies and made sure they were all spayed and neutered.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lowell White; dear friend, Judy Boullioun; and his very, very special dog companion, Charlie. He is survived by his children, Pam Mills (Rickey), Jeanie Wright (Mike) and Hal White (Tara). He is also survived by his former wife and mother of their children, Mary Ellen FingerWhite. He cherished his eight grandchildren, Tony, Alicia, Erica, Sarah, Kathryn, Haleigh, Blaykleigh and Victoria, and his three great-grandchildren, Riley, Reece and Sage.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 4 from 6-8 p.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). CABOT - Bessie A. Fortenberry, 91, of Cabot died Monday, April 1, 2013. She was born November 8, 1921 in Remmel, Arkansas, to the late Baudie and Magie Howard Brown. Mrs. Fortenberry was one of six children and a member of the Cabot Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and taking care of children, which she did in her home for over 25 years.

FORREST CITY - Dorothy Harris Mitchell passed away at her home on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. She had recently celebrated her 92nd birthday. The daughter of Pauline Harrell Harris and Aubrey Lee Harris, Sr., Ms. Mitchell was born in Forrest City, Ark. on March 10, 1921. She graduated from Forrest City High School, attended State Teacher’s College in Conway and graduated from Miss Wiley’s School of Business in Memphis, Tenn.For many years, Ms. Mitchell worked for the Forrest City Public Schools in the Administration Office as a secretary and book keeper. Subsequently, she moved to Little Rock and finished her career with the Child Nutrition Office of the Arkansas Department of Education. She energetically retired at the age of 79.

A lifelong Christian, Ms. Mitchell was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and a faithful member of the Night Circle. Among her many activities were the Forrest City Musical Coterie, a supper club of friends, and was a Life member of Junior Auxiliary. She was a volunteer usher at The Orpheum in Memphis and the Arkansas Rep Theatre in Little Rock. In addition, she enjoyed reading, bird watching, interior design, and traveling.

She was a loving mother to her children and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Ms. Mitchell had affectionately been known as Mama Dot. She was a warm, gentle Southern lady who was an outstanding cook and a gracious hostess. She was also a very strong, independent and focused individual.

Ms. Mitchell is survived by her three children, Lee Mitchell O’Banion of Forrest City, James Robert (Jim) Mitchell, Jr. and wife Karen of Little Rock, and Laura Mitchell Goodwin and husband Greg of Austin, Texas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Amy O’Banion Rottinghaus, Mitchell O’Banion, Jay Mitchell, Meredith Mitchell Leal, Aubrey Goodwin, Will Goodwin and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Aubrey Lee (Sonny) Harris, Jr. and a son-in-law, Russell King O’Banion.

Survivors are his wife, Mary Baty, Winchester, Arkansas two sons, Jay and Mark Baty of Winchester, seven daughters, Tracey Clifton, North Little Rock, Cathy Chatman, Searcy, Candle Baty of Louisiana, Teresa Griffin, Little Rock, Kelly Troviller, Roland, Barbara Ballard, McGehee, Alisha Hill of Georgia and two brothers, Charles Baty, Jacksonville, and Donnie Baty, Farmington, special niece Shelley Baty, 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation held 1-5 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, Griffin Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services held 3 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at Chapel Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, Jacksonville, Arkansas. Griffin Funeral Home Dumas in charge of arrangements.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Clarence Belve Wyatt Davis, 98, died March 30 in Hattiesburg, Miss. He was born March 13, 1915 in a log cabin on Possum Walk Creek near Five Mile, Cleburne County, Ark., the oldest of 11 children of Boyd Len and Edna Cora Sisemore Davis. His childhood was spent helping his father farm.

His opportunities for educationwere limited during the Depression. After finishing 10th grade at age 16,he was hired to teach grades 1-8 in the traditional one-room rural schools of Cleburne County. He was finally able to receive his diploma from Heber Springs High School in 1936 at age 21. He graduated from theUniversity of Arkansas with a degree in Agriculture in 1940.

That summer, he married Mabel Helen Roberson of Wilburn, Ark. From 1940 through 1949, he taught Vocational Agriculture in Mineral Springs, Lakeside Hot Springs, Prescott, and Arkadelphia High Schools in Arkansas, except for an interruption for military service in WWII. In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and was selected for officer training. He served as Personnel Officer with the rank of Lieutenant JG until his discharge in 1946.

In 1949, Clarence was hired by Citizen National Bank of Arkadelphia as Farm Loan Officer, the beginning of a long career in banking. From 1956-1958, he was Executive Vice President of the Bank of West Memphis. He then joined McIlroy Bank of Fayetteville, becoming President in 1959. He served in that capacity for 6 years.

In 1965, Clarence and a group of businessmen of Hattiesburg, Mississippi founded Southern National Bank. He served as its first and only president until 1977, when SNB merged with Deposit Guaranty National Bank of Jackson. He retired from DGNB in 1985 at age 70. Clarence enjoyed his retirement, woodworking, gardening, golfing, fishing, genealogy, and babysitting grandchildren. His wife of 52 years, Mabel, died in 1992. In 1994, he married Mary Walker Humphries. They were married almost 19 years.

Clarence was interested in economic development, and was involved in civic groups in all the communities in which he lived, especially Chambers of Commerce and Lions Clubs. He was also a very active Methodist, serving on the Board and as a long-time Sunday school teacher at Main Street Methodist Church in Hattiesburg.

Besides his first wife Mabel, Clarence was predeceased by two sisters, three infant brothers, and his stepson, Chris Humphries. He is survived by his second wife Mary Humphries Davis, two daughters, Jane Marino (John) of Springdale, Ark. and Mary Halliwell (David) of Hattiesburg; a stepdaughter, Deana Flak of Conroe, Texas; five grandchildren, Roman Marino (Esther) of Marbella, Spain, Camille Noble (Drew) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Sarah Carver (Brian) of Charleston, S.C., Harry Halliwell of Hattiesburg, and Mary Lucas Halliwell of Starkville, Miss.; a step-grandson, Jason Humphries of Hattiesburg; four great-grandchildren, Charlie, Scott, and Zachary Noble and Mercedes Marino del Castillo; two step-great-granddaughters, Haley and Emily Humphries; and two brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3 at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday, April 4 at Main Street Methodist Church at 11 a.m., visitation starting at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at a later date at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens in Heber Springs, Ark. Memorials may be sent to the church for Aldersgate Missions or to a charity of your choice.
