No injuries were reported in a fire that heavily damaged a large apartment building in Little Rock early Monday morning.

Little Rock Fire Department crews were called to Town Oaks Village on Southedge Drive around 4:30 a.m. Monday, arriving to flames shooting from the roof of a building housing about 12 apartments.

By 7 a.m., the visible flames had been doused but immense damage was visible: On much of the rectangular building, the roof was completely burned away, exposing the charred and soaked interior of second story apartments.

Capt. Edwin Woolf said only about four of the 12 units were occupied and all the residents in them — estimated preliminarily at eight people — were able to escape from the structure on their own.

Crews were still putting out hot spots later Monday morning and the fire marshal hadn't yet been inside to begin working to find the cause of the blaze, Woolf said.

The Red Cross was on scene providing assistance to the displaced residents.

Southedge Drive runs off Rodney Parham Road east of Interstate 430. The complex sits behind the Dollar General in the area.
