SAU not crying over ending milk program

MAGNOLIA — Southern Arkansas University is dropping its dairy program, saying it couldn't find enough students who wanted to milk cows twice a day.

Director of Farm Operations Rusty Hayes said the milk and dairy program had been in place for a century, but the school will concentrate on other areas at its $8 million Agriculture Center.

Hayes said the school reached a point where it would have to invest a lot of money to upgrade the dairy program or shut it down. Because few students were interested in the dairy process, the school opted to move on.

The school intends to sell its milk herd and equipment and move money into other parts of the university's farm operations, including its beef herd.
