Wellman tapped as new Travs manager

The Arkansas Travelers announced Tuesday that Phillip Wellman has been named manager for the 2014 season.

Wellman replaces Tim Bogar, who left the organization after the season to join the Texas Rangers as a bench coach.

Wellman has worked with various professional baseball organizations, including the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Cardinals, Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds. He spent the last three seasons as hitting coach with the Springfield Cardinals, the AA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I'm very grateful to the Los Angeles Angels for giving me the chance to manage again," Wellma said in a statement. "I have a lot to learn about the organization from top to bottom, but they've put good clubs here in Arkansas in the three years I've coached in the Texas League. I'm excited to be a part of it."

As a manager, Wellman has led clubs such as the the Gulf Coast Orioles and Winston-Salem in the Carolina League. He also spent eight years as a manager with the Mississippi Braves and Chattanooga Lookouts.
