Icy patches remain on some of Arkansas' highways, officials said Wednesday morning.
The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department reported on its online weather conditions map that highways were slick in places at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday in a large swath of northern Arkansas.
Also included in the highways with icy patches on them was Interstate 440 in Little Rock, which was the scene of several accidents and bumper-to-bumper traffic at one point during the morning commute Tuesday.
The National Weather Service also warned that roads could become slick in a large part of Arkansas where freezing fog is developing Wednesday.
More than a dozen counties were under a freezing fog advisory through 10 a.m. The fog can develop a "thin layer of ice on roads, bridges and overpasses, making them slick and hazardous," the weather service said in a statement. Visibilities will also be reduced.
"Slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you," the statement advised. "Also be alert for frost on bridge decks causing slippery roads."
Counties under the advisory are Conway, Garland, Johnson, Logan, Montgomery, Newton, Perry, Pike, Polk, Pope, Saline, Scott, Searcy, Van Buren and Yell.
Even areas without the fog advisory could see slick conditions from refreezing, the weather service said. Temperatures fell below freezing overnight and had reached only 24 degrees at 6:20 a.m. in Little Rock.
"While the pavement may look wet, there is ice in places and you may get caught off guard when applying your brakes," the weather service said.
