5 arrests in suspected Arizona drug-smuggling operation

PHOENIX — Authorities say five people have been arrested west of Phoenix in connection with a suspected drug-smuggling operation.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had been following two vehicles Wednesday morning before the Arizona Department of Public Safety became involved in the chase near Interstate 10.

Authorities say several people got out of the vehicles and ran.

Five people were eventually taken into custody while one person remains at large.

The names and nationalities of those arrested weren't immediately released by federal authorities or the DPS.

Homeland Security Investigations officials in Phoenix say three rifles were seized in the case.

They say the stop was part of an ongoing investigation into suspected drug-smuggling activities.
