MEMPHIS — The Memphis Police Department has put a stop to officers arresting civilians who film them.
The Commercial Appeal reported the department has issued an official policy that instructs officers not to arrest people filming them or confiscate their cameras. The newspaper reported that the policy was distributed to officers Tuesday and announced publicly Thursday.
The move comes after two incidents in October in which civilians were arrested and their cellphones confiscated after they refused to stop filming officers who were working.
The policy says that as long as a person has a right to be present, they also have a legal right to capture video.
