A motorist drives east on Elm Springs Road on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, in Springdale. Several stop signs, including the one at North 45th Street and Elm Springs Road, were damaged after a snow and ice storm hit northwest Arkansas.

Gov. Mike Beebe sought Monday disaster declarations for 15 Arkansas counties that accrued more than $8.6 million in damage in a December winter storm, the governor's office said in a statement.

Those counties, which were affected by a Dec. 5 winter storm, are: Crawford, Franklin, Independence, Johnson, Logan, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Newton, Polk, Scott, Searcy, Sebastian, Sharp and Van Buren.

Beebe has sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting the declaration, which would make Arkansas "eligible to receive federal aid to help the state, cities and counties recover from infrastructure damage," the governor's office said.

One Pope County man died after a tree fell on his camper, and about 62,000 Arkansans lost electricity in their homes as a result of the storm's ice, snow and winds.
